Objective

The objective of the EW2011 is to bring out the collective contribution of various engineering professions and to promote them as disciplines for the good of the community of Hong Kong. This is particularly important among the young generation, whose attraction to the professions is critical in ensuring continuous engineering excellence to help drive our world forward. Engineering is much more relevant to our daily lives than perhaps it is given credit for. Considering the macro and local issues faced by the community, EW2011 will focus on energy, transport and the environment, exploring and showcasing possible, often fun and innovative engineering solutions!

Hong Kong Engineering Week 2011 - “Bringing Engineering to Life” Launch Ceremony & Press Conference, 1st December 2010

On 1st December 2010, Ir Edmund KH Leung SBS OBE JP, Hong Kong Engineering Week 2011 (EW2011) Steering Committee Chairman, announced today the first ever Engineering Week in Hong Kong in the EW2011 Launch Ceremony and Press Conference in the HKIE Headquarter seminar Room.

“We want to promote public awareness and understanding of what engineering is,” said Ir Leung.  “No matter what we do in any given day, whether at home, at work or travelling, engineering is deployed to help drive our daily life, though behind the scene and un-noticed most of the time.  But I am sure we would all find it difficult to live without the support of engineers,” he added. “By bundling seven events we have been doing over the years by various engineering organizations in one week next March, we are hoping to lend more visibility and create more impact.”

Mr. Stephen Tetlow MBE, Chief Executive of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, based in the UK, also joined the Press Conference and shared how he has “Brought Engineering to Life” in his career as an engineer primarily in the defense industry. “Engineers always try to improve the planet.” said Mr. Tetlow.

Besides Ir Edmund Leung and Mr. Stephen Tetlow, the Chairman – Ir WK Chow and Vice-Chairman - Ir Stephen Lai of the EW2011 Organizing Committee, Chief Operating Officer of CLP Power HK Ltd. – Mr. Paul Poon who is one of the EW2011 platinum sponsors and the representatives from the other co-organizers have also joined the EW2011 Launch Ceremony. To symbolize the opening of the EW2011, the guests put the puzzles of the EW2011 logo together and announced the EW2011 to be held from 5 – 13 March 2011.
