Introduction
Young Inventor Competition provides opportunity for secondary school students, to show their engineering creativity / innovative talent and a long-term framework to nurture young inventors and new inventions in Hong Kong. It promotes the publicity of engineering to the community. A water powered rocket with parachute be designed and built for utilization of the available energy to longest stay on air. This is a way to promote sustainability and energy saving.
All students are required to design, build and launch their water powered rocket with parachute. The design objective is to maximize the utilization of energy to longest stay on air. This is a way to promote sustainability and energy saving. The student can show their engineering talent by applying the mechanical force, kinetic energy, potential energy, control and aerodynamic engineering knowledge.
During the building phase, students can work as a team to coordinate the work, solve problem, manage time and control budget. It promotes leadership, and teamwork.
The critical factors, such as how to convert the mechanical force to propel the rocket, how to launch the rocket and how to release the parachute successfully, such as overcome the friction of the launcher, how to fly in a straight line, how to release the parachute and longest stay on air.
